Wolfstride is a role-playing game about three former partners-in-crime coming to a turning point in their lives. When they inherit a junkyard mecha called Cowboy, they reunite to enter the planet’s most elite mecha competition: the Ultimate Golden God Tournament. Get wrecked in this immature grown-up RPG about a trio of troublemakers stumbling their way through a giant mecha tournament. Repair and upgrade the team’s hand-me-down rig, pick up odd jobs to pay the bills, and battle the best-of-the-best all while running from the regrettable choices of the past. Each member of the team lends their unique experience as they prepare to outwit the best mecha opponents from around the world.
The story is interesting and through it resembles animes/mangas it doesn’t feel as “over the top”. The store page already tells enough of what the game is about story-wise. In short: You’re a team of three who wants to win the Mecha world championships. There is actually a lot of story outside of the tournament, subplots, and whatnot. On your journey, you will experience a lot more. Between dog-mechanic Duque, mecha pilot Knife Leopard, and jack-of-all-trades Dominic Shade, the core crew’s got just about everything covered. That is until their simple mission to make money unfolds into a deep, slow-burning exploration of their complex lives, the dark choices of their past, and their inevitable fate.
This is the other big thing, next to the story. Battles are turn-based. Your Mech has five different HP bars. Two for your arms, one for your head, and one for your body. If your body’s HP reaches 0, you lose. The same goes for enemies. There are different attacks from throwing a car, to shooting guns, to hitting your enemy with your fist.
Also very important is your movement. There are seven tiles in total. Some will give you or the enemy +5 on attacks if you’re standing on it. You have to move up to 2 tiles each turn and push the enemy away. Then there is a bar next to your mech. It fills up over time. Fully loaded, you can use it to heal yourself, strengthen your attacks or restore your arm/head. Your attacks and defenses vary based on what you’ve unlocked and selected.
The hangar is Duque’s domain. Repairing damage between battles is just the beginning. Swap out parts, install upgrades, and add new weapons to improve Cowboy and perfect the custom loadout designed to beat your next opponent. Enter the arena to fight it out in giant robots one on one. The turn-based battle system rewards preparation and strategy. Move carefully to get in the best position to attack and keep the enemy off-balance. Target attacks to wear down your opponent or go on the defensive when the fighting gets too hot. Take the role of exiled former Yakuza, Dominic Shade, to explore every quirky corner of Rain City. A half dozen establishments introduce a kaleidoscope of characters, each offering support, a job, or a biting insult to your journey.
